Living in Willemstad
Willemstad is the capital of Curaçao, and around 90% of the island's people live in and around the city. This page is about its historic heart: the districts Punda, Otrobanda, Pietermaai and Scharloo. In 1997 they were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List as the Historic Area of Willemstad, Inner City and Harbour.
Punda, founded in 1634, is the oldest part, on the east side of the Sint Anna Bay. Across the water lies Otrobanda (1707), Papiamentu for 'the other side'. The two are joined by the Queen Emma Bridge, a floating pontoon bridge that is now for pedestrians only, while traffic crosses the harbour on the high Queen Juliana Bridge. North of Punda, across the Waaigat, lies Scharloo with its grand old mansions, and east of Punda lies Pietermaai. The colourful facades go back to an 1817 rule that buildings had to be painted in colour.
Pietermaai shows how the old town has changed. It was founded around 1675 and fell into decay from the 1970s on. After the UNESCO listing many of its historic buildings were restored and became boutique hotels, restaurants and bars, and today the district is known for its nightlife.
