Jan Thiel lies on Curaçao's south coast, about 8 km south-east of Willemstad, and officially belongs to Spaanse Water. Life here revolves around Jan Thiel Bay, with private beaches, beach clubs, restaurants and a dive school, and many hotels and holiday apartments around it. So expect a lively holiday feel rather than a quiet local neighbourhood.
Just behind the bay is a different world: a salt lake that draws many kinds of birds, including flamingos, with a route of about 10 km along the water. Salt was harvested here until 1975, and the ruins of overseers' houses, a lime kiln and a salt barn are still standing. In 1992 the land around the lake was divided into plots and sold, while the salt lake was kept as a nature area; it became a protected monument in 2008.
The name goes back to a plantation from around 1700, named after Jan Thielen. Its old plantation house, Landhuis Jan Thiel, is now a hotel set in a large garden.
