Living around the Spaanse Water
The Spaanse Water (Spanish Water) is a natural harbour and lagoon on Curaçao, east of Willemstad. The lagoon has several bays and small islands, and along its shores you find hotels, marinas and a golf course. Fort Beekenburg, built in 1703, and the Tafelberg also stand on the lagoon. Former plantations around the water were turned into residential areas, and in the second half of the 20th century the area also became a place for tourism. Today it counts as the most prosperous part of the island.
